President Koch called the Regular Meeting of the NFV Board of Education to order at 5:30 pm and Rich Klosterman led the board and audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Roll Call of Board members: Koch, Klosterman, Schlawin, Cummings, Ahrens, & Schultz. Rodgers was absent.
The agenda was approved as presented with the addition of the resignation of James Calkins – MS Social Studies & Girls V BB Coach. Schlawin/Schultz Motion Carried 6-0
Public Forum: President Koch welcomed and invited comments from the Public.
Motion to approve the consent agenda with the following items:
- Minutes of December 12, 2022, retiring and annual meeting and December 19, 2022 work session.
- Review/approve invoices
- Approve Financial Reports
- Approve Resignations/Retirements: Lori Westhoff – retirement at end of FY23 and James Calkins – MS Social Studies & Girls V BB Coach at end of FY23
- Approve Transfer: Tricia Anderson – MS Math for FY24
- Approve New Hires: Sierra Breitsprecher – HS Science
- Gifts: Knights of Columbus – $400 to Special Olympics, Anonymous – $4,600 to lunch accounts donation

COMMUNICATIONS
Student Ex-Officio Members Brooklyn Hoey & Claire Britt reported on starting the new semester, honor bands, Winter sports, and large group speech contests.
Principals’ reports included the Special Olympics competition, the beginning of a new year and semester, Future Ready District Data, increased college course enrollment & CTE involvement, and the Iowa Youth Survey.
Business Manager Thoms reported on preparing for negotiations as well as tax document preparations.
Superintendent’s report included that the February board meeting will be on the 20th in the PAC, interviews are being conducted for the elementary positions, as well as possible changes to Chapter 12 of the Iowa Code which governs public schools.
OLD BUSINESS
None.
NEW BUSINESS
Cummings made a motion to set a Public Hearing date for the FY24 school calendar on February 20th at 5:30 pm. Schlawin seconded. Motion Carried 6-0
Supt Griffith presented two sets of bus specifications. The Board approved the bus specifications. Schultz/Klosterman Motion Carried 6-0
The Board approved requesting bids for two 65-passenger school buses. Bids will be due before noon on February 8, 2023, and consideration of bids will be at the February 20th Board meeting. Schlawin/Ahrens Motion Carried 6-0
Alex Snyder presented the JAMF bill for our computer management system in the amount of $28,256.21 for January 1, 2023, through July 31, 2024. The Board approved the purchase of this system for 18 months. Cummings/Schultz Motion Carried 6-0
DISCUSSION
Cummings asked about hiring a conditioning coach. Asst Principal Miller reported that weightlifting is currently taking place on M, W,&F mornings and will be adding T & TH afternoons.
The Board went into closed session to conduct a Superintendent Mid-Year Evaluation per Iowa Code 21.5(i) at 5:53 pm. Schlawin/Schultz Roll Call Vote: Ayes – Cummings, Schlawin, Ahrens, Koch, Klosterman, Schultz, Nays – none Motion Carried 6-0
The Board came out of a closed session at 7:50 pm. No action was taken.
